Crown Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Crowns are caps or covers that are placed over damaged teeth to protect them from more harm. They are commonly used to treat problems like tooth injuries, severe cavities or teeth that are worn by aging.

At District Cosmetic Dental, Dr. Alex uses only zirconium crowns, never metal crowns. Zirconium is the strongest material for crowns, providing long-term protection for your teeth. They also blend in naturally with your teeth, so you don’t just feel better, you look better, too.

Your Zirconium crown should last between 20 and 30 years, but it can always be replaced if it is damaged. With your crown in place, you should have a beautiful, natural-looking smile and feel comfortable eating all of your favorite foods.

What do dentists use dental crowns to treat?

Crowns are one of the most common treatments for dental problems like:

  • Cracked, chipped or broken teeth
  • Teeth worn by age
  • Teeth weakened by fillings
  • Severely stained teeth
  • Cavities

Because crowns protect your natural teeth from damage, they can prevent the need for dentures or dental bridges. In the long run, they can save your teeth and save you money.

How long does dental crown treatment take?

You’ll need to visit Dr. Alex twice to receive your dental crown — first to prepare your tooth, and again to get your new crown. Throughout both appointments, Dr. Alex will ensure you stay as comfortable as possible. In your first appointment, he’ll remove the damaged parts of your tooth, such as chipped areas, worn areas, or areas with cavities. He’ll also shape your tooth so that your crown will fit snugly over it.

Once your tooth is prepared, a dental specialist will take images or a mold of your tooth so your crown can be made. A temporary crown will then be put on to protect your tooth until your next appointment.

When your permanent crown is ready, you will visit Dr. Alex again and he will place your crown. Your crown will match the color, size, and shape of your other teeth, so your smile will look natural and your teeth will fit well together when you bite.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

With your new crown in place, you’ll enjoy benefits like:

  • A beautiful new smile full of healthy looking teeth
  • A more functional bite for chewing food
  • Relief from any pain your damaged tooth used to cause you
