Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin artificial shells that cover misshapen, chipped, or discolored teeth to improve your smile. Dr. Alex permanently bonds zirconia-based veneers to intact, natural teeth to:

  • Improve the shape of natural teeth
  • Make teeth appear whiter
  • Reduce gaps in teeth
  • Make small teeth look larger
  • Cover chipped or cracked teeth
  • Improve the overall appearance of teeth
  • Boost confidence

Dr. Alex talks with you about your medical history and completes a dental evaluation (and X-rays, if needed) to determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers.

How are veneers placed?

Dr. Alex generally places veneers in a two-step process. During Phase 1, he shaves the enamel off the affected tooth. He then takes a mold of your teeth and sends it to a lab, where the veneers are made. The veneers will arrive one or two weeks later, and you’ll schedule an appointment for Dr. Alex to permanently attach them.

Before cementing veneers to your teeth, Dr. Alex will evaluate the shape, fit, and color of your veneers. He then cleans your teeth and roughens up their texture with a grinding tool. He then uses a dental cement to secure the veneers in place. Once the cement dries, the process is complete and you can enjoy your brand new smile.

How should I care for new veneers?

Veneers can last 10 - 15 years (or longer) if you take care of them properly. Use healthy oral hygiene techniques, such as:

  • Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss every day
  • Avoid foods that stain (tobacco, coffee, and tea)
  • Avoid chewing on ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candy
  • Don’t open packages with your teeth
  • Wear a mouthguard at night if you grind your teeth
  • Schedule regular dental cleanings and checkups

Veneers might have to be replaced over time no matter how well you care for them, but proper oral health care is crucial if you want to keep your smile as beautiful and healthy as possible.
